Literature Text

In the older days magic ruled the land. Beasts and races of legends existed, dragons, elves, basilisks. Mankind were the only ones not naturally born with magic pulsing in them.

The elves took pity of the more lesser beings and took the time to teach magic to some, worthy ones. With this came the birth of wizards, sorcerers-and their female equivalents-, necromancers, mages and summoners, one each had different meanings, but now are more or less the same.

Witches and wizards, though few in numbers, had a great impact on the land.

Magic was, and still is divided in six classes; Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Chaos and Order. And in each classes are different elements, some elements belong in multiple classes, while others are unique to a certain class.

But soon the magic started to fade. The ones who could already use magic kept getting stronger, but magic could no longer be learned by normal means. One had to be born with the pulse of magic to manipulate it.

The chances of a child having the gift, even if both parents were wizards, was very low. The number of wizards slowly dwindled.

The second generation of wizards might of been fewer in numbers, but they where stronger than the first, but since they weren't chosen, some weren't pure.

Wars quickly broke out between different factions of wizards. More than enough died.

From the second generation also came the four, their true names long lost and erased from history. The four, unlike the rest, isolated themselves, they did not help, nor harm any factions, beasts or race. Instead they studied magic even older than that which was thought to humans.

One specialized in the classes of Order and Water, noticeably the elements of Life and Ice. The mage became known as the Frost Owl as one of its many names. It became the only human mage capable of changing the weather on a global scale.

Another specialized in the class of Fire, the element at its purest form. Phoenix became one of its many names, and it specialized in the ancient magic of creating and giving consciousness and sentience to otherwise inanimate objects or feral beasts.

The remaining two dwelled in the elements of Chaos. One studied and tampered with the element of Death, it likes to work and change a person's fate, and itself became known as Fate.

The other, far more mysterious and secretive dwelled deep inside ancient magic. Able to create and destroy things almost at will. It became known to dwell in the element of Plague, known for creating a silvery mist across most of the northern regions. One of its many names was taken from it, simply called The Mist.

But humans were known to be destructive.

The humans soon grew jealous of the wizard and other, magic wielding races and beasts. Using full armies, they destroyed entire civilizations, exterminated to the point of extinction many species and races.

The wizard started fighting back, accompanied by the elves, and soon, the dragons.

But the humans seemed fuelled by a mysterious power. They quickly overpowered the combined efforts of the wizard, elves and dragons.

The elves were all slaughtered, every last women, child and baby. The wizard were all rounded up and killed, no matter their age.

A price became set for a dragon's head and almost every part of a dragon was legalized for medicine. They were soon hunted to extinction.

The four hid deeper than before, all knowing that there was a very high price for their head.

The land grew quiet, after a few years the mist in the north started to fade, the weather became calmer and people seemed to have longer lives.

The four were thought to have died of natural causes, and no one heard from them in years, decades, centuries and finally, millennia.

Magic and history turned to rumours, rumours to myths and myths to legend.

You can't stop all wizards from being born however, humans were, an still are, very, very rarely born with magical powers. Some don't even know it. Others hide to avoid getting executed.

But you can't hide magic, not forever.

Rumours of a black rider patrolling the western shores, of giant snakes swimming around in lakes and rivers throughout the lands, of giant flying shapes in the ash clouds of the volcanoes.

The silver mist has started reappearing in the north, freak weather conditions reported all around the land and strange shapes moving around in the seas.

You can never expect to kill magic
I just felt like doing a medieval-fantasy, magic-themed story/book

feedback and criticism is greatly appreciated.
